Graduated from Kharkov Higher Military School, 1971; civilian test pilot for Airforce Ministry; graduated from Moscow Aviation Institute, 1981; was selected as cosmonaut for Buran-flights on 09.03.1983 (LII-2); OKP (cosmonaut basic training): 9/85 - 1987; In November 1988, Sultanov served as chase pilot for the first unmanned flight of the Buran. He was later assigned as co-pilot, with Viktor Zabolotsky, of the back-up crew for the first manned orbital Buran mission - at that time scheduled for launch early 1992; Since 2002 he works for an aviation company in Zhukovski.
